A Perfect Weekend in Joshua Tree With My Kids

There’s something about a weekend in Joshua Tree that hits the reset button in the best way. As a Joshua Tree wedding photographer (and mom of three), I find that the desert works a special kind of magic—not just for portraits and elopements, but for family time too. On a recent trip, we stayed at one of the design-forward homes by Homestead Modern. These places are beautifully curated, often with pools, and stocked with high-end essentials like Grown Alchemist body wash and Public Goods snacks. My kids love the novelty of Airbnb living—new rooms to explore, different routines, and a fresh take on what “home” can look like. We kept it simple with a freezer pizza, a few rounds of card games, and a quiet night under the stars by the fire pit.

The next morning, we hit the Joshua Tree Farmers Market. It’s small but full of gems—perfect fruit, handmade snacks, and even flash tattoos. My husband and I have been eyeing Shea Cline, a local tattoo artist whose style is both playful and bold. She sometimes has a booth at the market, and I love how her pops of red and distinctive lines reflect the creative energy here. I’ve always thought downtown Joshua Tree would be an incredible backdrop for a shoot—there’s an urban desert vibe that would be perfect for a couple with a cool, non-traditional vision. I hope one day a dream client books me for a session right there.

After the market, we grabbed lunch at The Dez—a grab-and-go spot that makes what I swear is the best tuna sandwich on Earth. It’s the kind of low-key place you could miss if you weren’t looking, but it’s become a family favorite. Back at the house, we swam and relaxed, and when the afternoon light started shifting, we made our way into the park. Keyes View is our go-to sunset spot. It’s a short, rewarding hike with an overlook that’s pure gold. I usually sneak in a few portraits of the kids with that backdrop—and lately, my son’s been getting behind the camera, too. He took a photo of my husband and me that I’ll cherish forever.

Before heading home, I always carve out a moment to sit in the quiet and sip tea as the sun rises. There’s a misty lightness in the air that feels otherworldly. The colors of the sky and the way the sun breaks across the desert make for a peaceful close to the trip. It’s also when I start imagining how perfect these Homestead Modern homes would be for a small desert wedding. As a Joshua Tree elopement photographer, I’ve learned that intimate settings like these bring something truly special to the day—whether it’s just the couple or a handful of loved ones, the energy is always right.

We would close out our weekend with a visit to the Joshua Tree National Park Gallery, a stop at Hoo Doo Records, and a final oat milk latte from Frontier Café for the road. This place has my heart. It’s where I work, live, and explore—and it still feels like a vacation every time. Whether you’re planning family photos, an elopement, or a wedding, Joshua Tree offers a blend of calm and creative spirit that’s hard to top. I’d be honored to be your Joshua Tree family photographer, your go-to for weddings, or the one who helps tell your elopement story here in the desert.
