My top outside the box photo locations in the High Desert

As a Joshua Tree wedding and family photographer, I spend a lot of time scouting. And while the National Park is obviously stunning, there’s something I really love about shooting outside the park boundaries—no permits, no crowds, and no time crunch. Just good light, cool textures, and relaxed energy.

If you’re planning a session and want something a little different (or more accessible), here are three of my favorite local spots that always inspire me.

1. Downtown Joshua Tree Downtown Joshua Tree has the kind of desert charm that doesn’t try too hard—it just is. There are funky little shops, hand-painted murals, rusty signs, and the occasional Joshua Tree growing in an unexpected corner. It’s low-key eclectic, a little dusty, and completely full of character.

If you’re booking a family session, this is such a fun spot to bring the kids. We can wander, snack, and explore—maybe grab an ice cream cone from Sky High Pie and turn it into a sweet, spontaneous moment on camera. For couples, I love leaning into the raw textures and playful atmosphere for a session that feels both casual and artistic. This is the part of town where the stories live.

2. Design-Forward AirbnbsThere’s something special about photographing people in a space that feels lived-in but fresh. Some of my favorite sessions have taken place in Airbnbs—especially the design-forward homes managed by Homestead Modern, The Cohost Company, and Copper Moon Management.

Each house has its own energy—some are earthy and minimal, others are colorful and full of vintage finds. From curated furniture and desert views to clawfoot tubs and mid-century pools, these homes are made to be experienced—and photographed. They’re also perfect for small weddings, cozy elopements, or those in-between family moments that feel most like real life.

As a Joshua Tree elopement photographer, I often find myself walking through these spaces and imagining exactly where the vows would take place. The possibilities are endless.

3. PioneertownIf you’ve never been to Pioneertown, add it to your list. Just a short drive from Joshua Tree, this place is a photographer’s dream—especially if you're into a little Western grit and rustic charm. Built in the 1940s as a live-in movie set for Westerns, Pioneertown once hosted Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Now, it’s a mix of kitsch and cool, with wooden facades, saloon-style storefronts, and desert views that go on forever.

It’s a fantastic spot for couples who want a bit of quirky character in their photos, or families who are down for a little adventure. The golden hour light here? Unreal. It hits those old wooden boards and dusty paths just right.

So whether you're planning an elopement, an updated family session, or just want to celebrate being here—these locations outside the National Park offer so much magic without the red tape. As a local Joshua Tree photographer, I’d love to help you choose the perfect spot and bring your vision to life.
