The Magic of Small Weddings: Intimacy, Connection, and Authenticity

Sarah Jackson

Small weddings are my favorite to photograph, and it’s exciting to see them making a comeback. There’s something undeniably special about these gatherings, where the focus shifts from grandeur to genuine connection. Instead of being swept up in the hustle of a large event, couples can savor every moment with their closest friends and family. These celebrations are about intimacy, intention, and creating memories that feel authentic—elements that resonate deeply with me both as a photographer and as someone who values meaningful connections.

In the heart of every wedding are the details that make the day uniquely the couple’s own. For small weddings, these details become even more cherished. Invitations are often handwritten or designed with personal touches, setting the tone for the intimate day ahead. Rings, shoes, and flowers tell their own stories, and I love capturing them in a setting that holds sentimental value—like on Grandma’s antique dresser, where the years seem to whisper their blessings on the day. These small, intentional moments make every wedding feel like a piece of living art.

Location plays a huge role in setting the vibe of a small wedding. In California, I’ve found that family homes, charming backyards, and breathtaking Airbnbs—especially in places like Palm Springs and Joshua Tree—are perfect backdrops. These spaces allow couples to relax and focus on their loved ones without the formality of a traditional venue. Whether it’s the desert glow of golden hour in Joshua Tree or the retro-chic aesthetic of a Palm Springs hideaway, each place brings a sense of connection and warmth to the celebration.

Photographing small weddings is where I thrive. With fewer than 50 guests—sometimes fewer than 25—it’s easy to ensure that everyone is captured, not just in group photos but in candid, meaningful moments with the couple. Each guest has a purpose at the wedding, and I love preserving those personal interactions—the laughter over dinner, a heartfelt hug, or the look of pure joy during a toast. Small weddings have a way of making everyone feel seen, which is a gift both for the couple and for me as the photographer.

Budgeting for a smaller wedding means there’s room for intentional choices. Without the need to book large venues or rent 100 chairs, couples can invest in the things that matter most to them. Maybe it’s the perfect dress they’ve dreamed of or stunning floral arrangements that transform the space. With fewer logistics to juggle, small weddings allow couples to create a day that reflects their personalities and priorities, whether that’s serving tacos, sharing homemade desserts, or dancing barefoot under the stars.

Ultimately, small weddings are about heart, and capturing them is a privilege I don’t take lightly. With six years of experience, I bring a timeless, joyful, and organic approach to documenting love stories. Using a combination of 35mm film and digital photography, I create images that feel vibrant, authentic, and enduring. If you’re planning a wedding that celebrates love in its purest form, I’d be honored to be part of your day. My wedding collections start at $850, and I’m here to preserve your story with care and intention.
