The High Desert Food Scene: Unexpectedly Delicious
When people think about visiting Joshua Tree or exploring the Mojave, they picture wide open skies, funky art, and rocky hikes—but the food scene is absolutely worth the trip too. From laid-back taco joints to pizza with live music under the stars, the High Desert has plenty of low-key gems serving seriously good food. As a Joshua Tree wedding photographer and regular in the area, I’ve eaten at nearly every spot on this list (and have strong opinions).

Alborgatas Taco Shop (Yucca Valley)
Tucked into the shopping center at 62 and Church Street, Alborgatas Taco Shop is a hidden gem with an incredible salsa bar. I go straight for the cilantro salsa—super fresh and bright. Their menu is massive, so whether you're in the mood for tacos, burritos, or a plate of carne asada fries, you’ll leave full and happy. It’s casual, fast, and totally satisfying after a long desert day.
Yucca Kabob (Yucca Valley)
This is one of those spots that quietly has a cult following. My go-to is the chicken shawarma, but the beef is melt-in-your-mouth tender, too. The hummus is some of the best around, and the flatbread? Perfectly chewy. Locals rave about the garlic sauce and lentil soup, and the portions are generous enough to share (or not). If you’re craving Mediterranean food in the High Desert, this is the place.

Giant Rock Meeting Room (Landers)
There’s not a ton to eat in Landers—but Giant Rock Meeting Room makes up for that and then some. The pizza is excellent, the staff is friendly, and the vibe is pure desert magic. The owner even built a stage out back where you’ll sometimes catch live music on warm nights. It’s the kind of spot you stumble into and never want to leave. Totally worth the short drive if you’re staying near Joshua Tree or Pioneertown.
Don’t Miss These Last Two: La Copine + Yucca Tree Eatery
If you’ve heard of any High Desert restaurant, it’s probably La Copine. Known among chefs for its seasonal, locally inspired menu, this spot draws people from all over California. I haven’t made it there yet, but it’s next on my list—and the hype is real.
If you're more of a breakfast-all-day kind of person, head to Yucca Tree Eatery. Their breakfast tacos are killer, and the burger is another favorite. It’s cozy, friendly, and closes at 3PM—so plan ahead. Whether you’re fueling up before a hike or winding down after a sunrise shoot, this spot is a solid go-to.
